In October the AIID facility early works reached a significant milestone with the completion of structural demolition. All former buildings on the site have now been razed to ground level.
This follows another significant milestone in September when key planning approvals were achieved and a main works tender to construct the facility commenced.
With the significant structures now removed, archaeological investigations are underway to search for traces of the site’s history (see image below).
The land has had many uses over the years, from the sovereign lands of the Wurundjeri people to the colonial era when the Harvest Home Hotel served the nearby hay market; the namesake of today’s Haymarket Roundabout and Haymarket Walk. Any significant artefacts uncovered will be carefully documented and retained.
Early works are scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, the facility design has been assessed and is on track to receive a 5 Star Green Star rating, representing Australian excellence in better, healthier and more responsible buildings. Read more about the rating achievement here.
