AIID on track for 5 Star Green Star design rating

The Australian Institute for Infectious Disease (AIID) facility design has been assessed and is on track to receive a 5 Star Green Star rating, representing Australian excellence in better, healthier and more responsible buildings.

The rating underscores the AIID Foundation Partners’ commitment to creating a facility that not only enables world-leading infectious disease research but also minimises its environmental impact and supports the wellbeing of its people and the broader community.

The Green Star certification assesses buildings across key categories including energy, water, materials, health and wellbeing, transport, and innovation. The AIID’s 5 Star design rating recognises the design’s high performance across each of these areas, positioning the facility among the leading examples of sustainable infrastructure in Australia.

Of note, the AIID achieved credits in the ‘clean air’ category which rates designs on their ventilation systems and provision of outdoor air — a key focus for many AIID researchers in reducing the risk of infectious disease as well as other hazards such as bushfire smoke, allergens, pollution, and mould.

The AIID project has also ensured that early and enabling works prior to the facility’s construction are undertaken with minimal environmental impact. At least 90% of materials from the deconstruction and demolition of the existing buildings is being diverted from landfill, and at least 2% of the total early works contract value is being directed to groups that are under-represented in the construction industry.
