Early and enabling works have continued on the AIID building site through March and April ahead of building demolition.
In March, staff from the Doherty Institute and neighbouring University of Melbourne buildings were briefed by the AIID Project Team and early and enabling works contractor, Kane, on what to expect throughout the process. Outreach has also been made to neighbouring businesses and organisations external to the University and Doherty Institute to inform them of progress.
Every effort will be made to minimise disruptions to staff and external neighbours throughout the AIID facility delivery process. Where disruptions cannot be avoided, they will be communicated to staff and neighbours along with any alternative arrangements or mitigations as early as possible.
Efforts to remove and reuse or recycle furniture and fittings from the existing buildings have been very successful with more than 24 tons of materials salvaged and saved from landfill.
Our partnership with Project Net Zero, an Indigenous owned and run organisation, has seen hundreds of items removed and warehoused for donation to Indigenous and other community organisations – a huge win for the environment and vital not-for-profit services. You can read more about their work here.
Meanwhile, staff from the Foundation Partner organisations have continued their valued contributions to the schematic design process, with the final design recently presented back to user groups. Design development is now underway and we thank all Foundation Partner staff members who have been involved in the first two rounds of user group meetings for this process.
